Vienna (13th July 2017). – Vienna is excellent and that too in many respects. Good accessibility, many cultural offerings, professional high quality hotels and other tourist service providers, security as well as stability. These are all perfect conditions for a congress destination. This is also confirmed by the current ICCA statistics. Based on the 186 international congresses held in 2016, the International Congress and Convention Association “ICCA” ranks Vienna as world’s number 2 – right behind Paris but even before Barcelona and Berlin. The Vienna Tourist Board (Wien Tourismus) estimates the total value generated by the Viennese congress business at EUR 1.072 billion, thus securing around 20,000 all-year workplaces.

International top level security concept

Reed Exhibitions, the exclusive operator of Messe Wien, plays a significant part. Around 100 guest events including more than a dozen large international events take place here every year. For the events at Messe Wien alone, WIFO (Austrian Institute of Economic Research) calculated around EUR 270 million annual gross value added as well as tax effects of further EUR 128 million and 4,500 secured jobs. In order to maintain this success story we are continuously investing – in infrastructure, e.g. technical IT upgrades and barrier-free accessibility, as well as security. The most recent project is a security concept for Messe Wien, which Reed Exhibitions is currently working on together with the security experts of the Provincial Police Directorate Vienna and other security authorities.

“Safety is at the forefront of all events at Messe Wien. This includes safety services and concepts from smaller accidents to a terrorist threat scenario. Conclusive and professional security concepts for a venue, especially for international congresses, are a must even in the application phase. We are delighted that in the development and evaluation of our security plans, we can count on the expertise of the professionals from the Viennese police and can incorporate their expert knowledge into our concepts” says Martin Roy, CEO of Reed Exhibitions in Austria.

This project is particularly supported by the Provincial Police Directorate Vienna. Deputy Provincial Police Chief General Karl Mahrer: “Messe Wien is a leading touristic company of the city and therefore also responsible for the internationally outstanding reputation of Vienna. Therefore, it is natural for us to contribute our expertise for the evaluation of the security concept. It will meet all contemporary requirements and increase the security at Messe Wien and thereby also for the entire city of Vienna.”(+++)
