Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the events industry. At VIECON Messe Wien, it is not just a claim, but a continuous development process that is directly visible on the premises. Numerous initiatives ensure that the location remains ecologically sustainable while offering a pleasant environment for guests, partners, and employees.
Green courtyards: New feel-good spaces in urban environments
The inner courtyards of VIECON have undergone extensive revitalization in recent months. Overgrown areas have been transformed into structured, low-maintenance green spaces with shrubs and perennials. These green courtyards improve the microclimate, create natural shade zones, and offer visitors and employees places to relax—an important building block for greater sustainability at the venue.
Nature-oriented enhancement: From decorative pond to green space
The former decorative pond has also been redesigned. Instead of a water-intensive fountain, a planted green area now provides greater biodiversity. It offers a habitat for beneficial insects and helps to conserve resources. This area also acts as a natural cooling zone and helps to noticeably reduce the urban heat island effect on the forecourt of Hall A. This contributes both to the quality of life and to the climate impact of the entire area.
Sustainability on the roof: Five bee colonies for BEECON
One highlight of the current measures is the new bee project. Five beehives have been installed on the roof of the Congress Center. The colonies will collect nectar in the nearby Prater park and produce the first BEECON honey. Master beekeeper Thomas Zelenka is providing technical support for this project. It brings sustainability to life and shows how valuable urban spaces can be for biodiversity.
Vertical greening: Hall A grows upwards
The new green façade on Hall A is another visible sign of this. Twenty-six plant troughs with a total of 78 climbing plants are gradually transforming the hall wall into a vertical green space. This provides natural cooling, binds CO₂, and makes Messe Wien an attractive, climate-friendly location in an urban area.
Green electricity & modern lighting: Focus on energy efficiency
VIECON is also taking clear steps toward climate neutrality in the energy sector. The entire site is now supplied with 100% green electricity from hydropower. This switch significantly reduces the carbon footprint and ensures that all events take place on a sustainable energy basis.
At the same time, the entire site—with the exception of Hall D—has been completely converted to energy-efficient LED lighting. LEDs consume significantly less electricity, have a longer service life, and noticeably reduce energy consumption during operation.
Commitment to global climate goals: Net Zero Carbon Event Pledge
In addition to structural and ecological measures, VIECON is also sending a clear strategic signal. By signing the Net Zero Carbon Event Pledge, the location is committing itself to measuring emissions transparently, actively reducing them, and reporting on them regularly. The goal is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest—in line with the requirements of the Paris Agreement.
Sustainability in detail: From recycled mats to Christmas trees
Many small steps also contribute to the sustainability strategy. The new GreenMats in the entrance areas are made from recycled PET bottles, save water in the cleaning process, and reduce CO₂ emissions.
Seasonal decisions are also made consciously: during Advent 2025, the reception area will feature a regional Christmas tree in a pot, which will continue to be cared for after the season. This creates less waste – and the tree can be used for several years.
Conclusion: A location that takes responsibility
VIECON demonstrates how diverse sustainability can be—from green facades and biodiversity projects to strategic climate goals. Step by step, a location is being created that combines ecological responsibility with urban quality of life, thus making an important contribution to a sustainable future for events in Vienna.
