As of April, Gerald Stainoch has taken over the Business Development division at VIECON. Previously, he spent five years as Head of Sales for the lifestyle, hospitality, and care industries. With extensive experience in the trade fair industry and a strategic mindset, he is now looking to actively shape the future of VIECON.
From Sales to Strategic Development
Gerald joined RX in the summer of 2020—at a time when the global events industry was facing unprecedented challenges. “The restart after the lockdowns greatly strengthened team spirit and our capacity for innovation,” he says. One of the most formative experiences for him was the international collaboration during the integration of several corporate sites. “I learned how crucial it is not just to change processes but to build sustainable structures.”
Business Development at VIECON – New Formats, New Markets, New Opportunities
As Head of Business Development, Gerald aims to unlock new revenue opportunities for VIECON. He sees particularly strong potential in Vienna’s role as a congress and trade fair destination: “Vienna offers outstanding infrastructure, international visibility, and a solid economic foundation—ideal conditions to further establish VIECON as a leading location.”
Goals and Projects: Shaping Growth
In the coming months, Gerald will focus on targeted market analysis and the smart use of existing infrastructure. At the same time, he is working on long-term partnerships to bring new event formats to Vienna. He also sees major potential in licensing fairs—for both content and economic growth.
One exciting project has already been implemented: the introduction of “Lionel,” a state-of-the-art floor-marking robot from August Robotics. This technology enables automated, precise markings in a short amount of time and offers clear benefits, including greater flexibility in hall management, shorter setup times, and improved quality for clients. A concrete example of how business development and operational excellence go hand in hand at VIECON.
Network as a Key to Success
With over 25 years of experience in the tourism, hospitality, and events industry, Gerald is well connected in the field—a strength he plans to leverage for VIECON. “I see it as my role to build bridges: between organizers, the City of Vienna, the business sector, and our international partners. If we succeed, we’ll create sustainable growth and strengthen Vienna’s position as an international trade fair hotspot.”
International Perspectives for VIECON
In May, Gerald attended the UFI European Congress in Thessaloniki for the first time—one of the most important gatherings in the trade fair industry. Alongside sessions on sustainable venue strategies, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and new concepts in sales and visitor experience, personal exchange was a key focus. “The dialogue with colleagues from across Europe was incredibly enriching. Many challenges are global—which makes international networking all the more important. I look forward to putting these new insights into practice at VIECON.”
